Meet Chloe Worrall, Materials Off Take Manager at Willshee’s

With over 15 years’ experience in the waste management sector, Chloe now plays a vital role at Willshee’s. As Materials Off Take Manager, she is responsible for overseeing the movement of various processed materials, ensuring compliance, and maintaining strong relationships with sites and off-take facilities. In this Q&A, we gain insight into Chloe’s career journey, her day-to-day responsibilities, and what she values most about her work at Willshee’s.

Q: Can you describe your current role? What does a typical day look like for you?

A: As the Materials Off Take Manager, I manage all the outgoing flows of materials like Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), as well as many other material streams. A typical day can be quite varied. I might be on-site taking samples of materials to ensure they meet compliance standards, checking stock levels, and troubleshooting any issues the site teams are facing. Alternatively, I could be visiting off-take facilities to build relationships and secure future agreements for our processed tonnage. It’s a dynamic role that requires close collaboration with our sites, off-take partners, and hauliers.

Q: How did you start in the waste management industry, and what has your career journey been like?

A: My entry into the waste industry was at a local Council, where I gained a really solid understanding of the operational side – working closely with collection crews, learning about routing, and the intricacies of different waste and recycling streams, from domestic to commercial and garden waste. Following this, I moved to a leading exporter, where I managed Transfrontier Shipments. This involved navigating the complex regulations for exporting waste, obtaining necessary permissions from UK and overseas agencies, and ensuring all documentation was compliant. After having my daughter, I returned to the waste industry with Willshee’s in 2022, where I was initially focused on material testing compliance and assisting with off-take before progressing to my current role.

Q: What do you find most rewarding about working at Willshee’s and in the waste management industry?

A: What I find most rewarding about working at Willshee’s is the people and the company culture. Despite being a leading waste company in the Midlands, it genuinely retains a personal, family feel. There’s a real sense of teamwork and collaboration. In terms of the industry itself, I find it fulfilling to play a part in ensuring materials are handled responsibly and efficiently, contributing to a more sustainable future. Seeing the journey of waste materials and ensuring their proper off-take is a key part of that.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role, and how do you overcome them?

A: One of the ongoing challenges is managing the diverse requirements of different off-take facilities and ensuring a consistent flow of compliant materials from our various sites. This requires meticulous planning, strong communication, and proactive problem-solving. Staying closely connected with both our internal teams and external partners is crucial. Willshee’s has also enabled me to gather valuable accreditations to help navigate the complexities of material compliance.
