6 Tips for Cleaning Up Your Garden This Spring: What Can You Do with Garden Waste?

We’re currently entering a brand new season. It’s the transition from the cold, bitter winter weather into the brighter, more colourful season of spring. With spring comes new life, especially in the garden. But often, new plant life is encouraged by the tidying up and cutting back of old stems and leaves. This makes way for fresh buds and blooms when spring gets fully underway. So, how can you deal with the garden waste you produce? Here are a few tips to help you responsibly deal with your garden waste this spring:

1. Choose a licensed waste carrier to deal with your garden waste

When you have garden waste to get rid of, choose a registered waste carrier to handle it for you. We can do that here at Willshee’s. A waste management company with a waste carrier’s license will dispose of your waste responsibly. This involves being eco-friendly and using dedicated waste processing facilities.

Essentially, it gives you absolute peace of mind that your waste is not fly-tipped. Fly-tipping can lead to hefty fines, even if you’re not the one doing it. You’re responsible for the waste you’ve generated. So it’s up to you to make sure that it’s disposed of responsibly. Therefore, check that the waste management company you’ve chosen has a waste carrier’s license. Do this before letting them take your waste away.

Here at Willshee’s, we have the capability and facilities available to recycle a wide range of different materials. This includes the waste that comes from your garden. Whether you’re trimming a few trees or are undergoing a complete renovation, we can recycle:

  • Wood – wood is chipped and graded. This allows it to be used for different purposes, such as animal bedding, panel board or biomass
  • Concrete and hardcore – including ceramics, these are crushed and screened before being used as a secondary aggregate
  • Soil – recycled soils are reused as topsoil or for engineering material
  • Green waste (such as leaves and branches) – this is mulched and composted, being used as fertiliser on agricultural land

2. Consider making a compost heap

Green waste, such as stems and leaves, can be used to create a compost heap. All you need is a dedicated bin in which to compost those materials. You might also be surprised to know that it’s not just garden waste that can go into your compost bin.

You can also dispose of some types of food and even tea leaves and grounds this way. The great thing about having your own compost heap is that the compost it generates can be used next summer to fertilise your plants and flowers. So, what can you put in your compost bi,n and what should be avoided? Let’s take a closer look:

  • You can compost: fruit and vegetable scraps, tea leaves, coffee grounds, eggshells, grass clippings, green plant clippings, old flowers, weeds, straw, paper, cardboard, dry leaves, woody prunings and sawdust
  • You cannot compost: diseased plants, pet droppings, cooking fat, glossy paper, cooked food, weeds with seeds, treated timber, large branches and bones

3. Use felled trees, fallen leaves & grass cuttings to make mulch for your plants

This is a great alternative if you don’t fancy having a compost bin at the end of your garden. It’s a simple yet effective method of recycling the garden waste you’ve generated. Chop up branches finely and use them to mulch the bottom of your plants.

The same thing goes for any old leaves you’ve collected or any grass cuttings. Simply mix it all together and sprinkle it at the base of your shrubs, plants, flowers and bushes. You’ll soon notice an improvement in the appearance of your plant life by using organic materials to feed and maintain them.

4. Take a trip to your local recycling centre

If you’re struggling to find another way of getting rid of your garden waste, either because you don’t have enough for a waste management company to collect or because you don’t want to create a compost heap, then the next best thing is to take your green waste to your local recycling centre. Almost all of the recycling centres funded by local councils will have a garden waste section for you to utilise.

Although it’s important to note that some recycling centres like to separate tree trunks from branches, for instance. There might also be a diameter restriction on tree trunks and stumps, with some of those items being chargeable, especially soil. Make sure you know what the requirements are before you bring your garden waste to your local recycling centre.

5. Consider domestic skip hire from Willshee’s

No waste management service is as convenient as domestic skip hire, especially when you have a garden project on hand. Whether you’re looking to give your large trees their annual trim or are completely overhauling your outdoor space, domestic skip hire from Willshee’s is the best solution for you.

You won’t have far to go by choosing to hire a skip and having it placed on your driveway or the road (for an additional charge). Once you have finished filling your domestic skip with garden waste, let us know and we will come and collect your skip at a time that is suitable for you.

This is a great solution, no matter the amount of green waste you have, as we have a wide range of skip sizes available to meet your needs and requirements. From mini 2.5-yard mini skips right through to 8-yard skips with a drop-down door, we will have you covered when it comes to domestic skip hire.

6. Put your garden waste into a designated bin from your Local Authority

Another way of cleaning up your garden waste this spring is to simply place your green waste into your designated garden bin provided to you by your local council. However, they too will have rules about what you can and can’t place in your garden waste bin, so make sure you check with them before using it to get rid of green waste. For instance, some councils will prohibit soil, tree trunks and tree stumps from being put in their curbside collection garden bins.

Willshee’s is pleased to provide domestic and commercial skip hire to a wealth of customers throughout the East Midlands. We can also offer various waste management solutions, including commercial waste management and hazardous waste disposal, among other services.
