The Control Room Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) from the control room.
The role ensures that all plant equipment and processing lines operate to achieve production targets, maintain material quality standards, maximise recovery rates, and meet Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) production requirements.
The Control Room Supervisor will also coordinate operational staff, monitor plant performance, and respond to process issues to minimise downtime.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Control
• Monitor and control the operation of all MRF processing equipment through the facility control systems.
• Ensure all plant processes are operating safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company procedures.
• Continuously monitor throughput, recovery rates, contamination levels, and equipment performance.
• Identify and respond to operational issues, blockages, alarms, and equipment faults.
• Coordinate with maintenance teams to address breakdowns and minimise production interruptions.
• Maintain accurate operational records, logs, and production reports.
Quality Management
• Ensure recovered materials meet customer and company quality specifications.
• Monitor material streams and adjust plant settings to maximise product quality and recovery.
• Work closely with quality control personnel to reduce contamination and improve output quality.
• Investigate quality issues and implement corrective actions where necessary.
SRF Production Management
• Monitor SRF production rates and quality standards.
• Ensure SRF production targets are achieved in line with operational requirements.
• Optimise plant performance to maximise SRF output while maintaining specification compliance.
• Coordinate stock levels and production schedules to meet customer demand.
Team Leadership
• Supervise and coordinate operational staff across the facility.
• Allocate tasks and resources to ensure efficient plant operation.
• Provide guidance, support, and training to operators and sort line personnel.
• Monitor staff performance and ensure adherence to operational procedures.
• Promote a positive safety culture throughout the facility.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
• Ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and permit requirements.
• Monitor plant operations for unsafe conditions and take immediate corrective action where necessary.
• Participate in risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
• Ensure all staff follow company safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety and operational performance.

Skills and Experience
Essential
• Experience working within a waste management, recycling, MRF, or processing facility.
• Understanding of mechanical processing equipment and automated plant operations.
• Experience supervising or managing operational staff.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Good computer literacy and experience using SCADA or plant control systems.
• Excellent communication and organisational skills.
Desirable
• Previous control room or supervisory experience within a waste processing environment.
• Knowledge of SRF production and quality standards.
• IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent health and safety qualification.
• Mobile plant or waste management qualifications.
