What Kind of Skip Will I Need for Construction Waste?

Construction projects often generate copious amounts of construction waste, especially if it’s a commercial project as opposed to a domestic one. With this in mind, it’s important that you’re choosing the right waste management solution for your needs and Willshee’s will be on hand to help.

You might have got to the point where you know that a construction waste skip is the best, most appropriate option for you, but you might not know where to go from there. You could have numerous questions, including, but not limited to:

  • How big does my construction skip need to be?
  • How long will I need it for?
  • What, exactly, can I put in a construction waste skip?
  • How much waste will this project generate, approximately?
  • Do I have the budget to elongate the skip hire contract if need be?
  • Is there anything I cannot put in a construction waste skip?
  • Will there be availability when I need it?

No matter your questions about construction waste or construction waste skips, we’ll be sure to have an answer here in this article. So how do you go about selecting the right skip for you and what else should you consider before giving the go-ahead on construction skip hire?

How to select the right skip for construction waste

There are three things you should take into account when looking to hire a construction skip, including: waste segregation, the amount of waste you have, restrictions and what the provider can offer you. So let’s look into those things in more detail below:

C

Segregate waste based on suitability

It’s imperative that the waste you generate is segregated accordingly. You cannot put anything into a construction waste skip. Where you’ll still be able to dispose of a wide range of different materials, it should not be treated, wholly, as a mixed waste skip. If you do, you could end up having to pay penalty fees. Make sure you check with your skip provider as to what you can and cannot put into a construction waste skip.

You will be allowed to put the following materials into a construction waste skip from Willshee’s:

  • Cardboard
  • Wood
  • Soil
  • Hardcore
  • Plasterboard
  • Metla
  • Plastics
  • Green waste

Usually, there are three essential categories that are involved: general waste that can and cannot be compacted, inert materials (concrete, ceramics and aggregates), soils and recyclable waste. As long as the waste you’re generating doesn’t fall outside of those categories, you should be able to place them in a construction waste skip.

C

Think about how much waste you will need to get rid of

Look at the project you have at hand and think about the amount of waste that could be generated. If you work on a housing development site, then you might be better off with grab hire services or even 20 or 40 yard skips. However, if you’re working on smaller projects, then you might well get away with a skip of a smaller size. The skip sizes available to you include:

  • 2.5 yard skips (mini) – holds approximately 20-30 black bin bags
  • 4 yard skips (midi) – holds approximately 30-40 black bin bags
  • 6 yard skips (with drop down door) – holds approximately 50-60 black bin bags
  • 8 yard skips (with drop down door) – holds approximately 70-80 black bin bags
  • 12 yard skips – holds approximately 120 black bin bags
  • 20 yard skips (roll on/off) – holds approximately 200 black bin bags
  • 40 yard skips (roll on/off) – holds approximately 400 black bin bags

C

Think about possible restrictions

Where there will some restrictions with regards to the skip itself, such as not being able to put prohibited items in it or filling it above the line, there will be some restrictions your end that you might not have thought about, including:

  • Space availability – do you have the space for one skip of a particular size or will you be able to fit multiple ones on the property?
  • Time availability – will you be able to fill the skip with all of the waste you have within the given timeframe?
  • Budget size – make sure you have the budget to extend the skip hire contract if and when needed, but also make sure you can afford to hire the skip you require in the first place

C

What should you consider when selecting a skip for construction waste?

Skip hire is an essential part of any project, whether it be commercial or domestic. However, in the case of construction waste, this is usually generated as part of a commercial project as opposed to anything else. Skip hire is a popular choice for many for a number of reasons, including:

  • You’ll be able to get rid of lots of waste all at once
  • It’s a cost-effective option for those with lots of waste to dispose of
  • It’s a convenient option as it can be delivered and taken away at a time to suit you
  • A skip can be used to dispose of a wide range of waste types
  • There are several skip sizes and types available, including grab hire

But there are a few things you should consider before looking to hire a construction skip from Willshee’s. The following should be taken into account before looking to hire a skip for the construction waste you either will produce or are yet to:

  • The size of the skip needed – usually determined by the amount of waste you have
  • How long you’ll need it for – again, this is determined by the amount of waste you have and the labour you have available to help fill the skip
  • When the skip will be needed – to make it as cost-effective as possible, hire the skip at a time where the waste is already piled and ready to be transferred into a skip. In cases where this cannot happen, hire the skip and have it arrive the morning your project commences
  • Understand that delays might occur – you might need the skip for longer than you initially realised and this will incur extra costs, but discuss it with your provider as they can be relatively flexible when it comes to extending skip hire contracts
