How is Zero-Waste-to-Landfill Achieved When Dealing with Commercial Waste?

Commercial waste could contain a wide range of different materials. There might even be some products within commercial waste that you might think would be impossible to reuse, recycle or repurpose, but here at Willshee’s, we will find a way to stop even the most unlikely of materials from ending up in landfill, but how? We take a zero-waste-to-landfill approach to all of the waste we collect. But what does that mean and how, exactly, do Willshee’s achieve it when dealing with commercial waste?

C

What does ‘zero-waste-to-landfill’ mean?

‘Zero-waste to landfill’ is exactly that; sending as little as possible to landfill sites. Where it might be ‘zero-waste-to-landfill’, it’s unlikely that every single scrap of waste will be spared the trip to landfill, but everything in our power will be done to ensure this does not happen, with landfill being the very last, most undesirable option for us here at Willshee’s. According to The Carbon Trust, zero-waste-to-landfill should be looked at more as a philosophy for businesses and companies alike to work towards.

C

What is commercial waste?

Commercial waste is any type of waste that has been produced by a company, business or organisation. Regardless of the industry they work in, any waste generated by the aforementioned is considered to be commercial waste. As such, it has to, by law, be disposed of responsibly. For example, you cannot take commercial waste home to get rid of it there.

Willshee’s understand how important it is for you to offload your commercial waste to a registered company, hence why we’re pleased to offer our services to a wide range of industries and sectors, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Offices
  • Shops
  • Restaurants
  • Bars
  • Hotels
  • Manufacturing
  • Distribution centres
  • Construction sites
  • Manufacturing companies

C

Why is the zero-waste-to-landfill initiative important?

Landfill sites produce a huge amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Up until recently, more often than not, waste was being sent straight to landfill rather than being reused, recycled or repurposed. In this modern age, the importance of the three R’s (reuse, recycle and repurpose) has been amplified in a bid to cut our carbon footprints.

This is why Willshee’s are proud to take a zero-waste-to-landfill approach when dealing with the waste we collect from our customers across the Midlands. We are dedicated to reducing our own contribution to air, water and soil pollution, so in turn, you’ll be able to do the same if you choose Willshee’s to collect and dispose of, not only your commercial waste, but your domestic waste also.

C

How is zero-waste-to-landfill achieved when dealing with commercial waste?

Zero-waste-to-landfill is, as already mentioned, an extremely important part of waste management and treatment, more so now than ever before. As the need for us to reduce our carbon footprints increases, you’ll be able to count on Willshee’s to collect your commercial waste and dispose of it in a responsible, eco-friendly manner.

Willshee’s recover useable energy from commercial waste products

Energy recovery is, as the name would suggest, the process of recovering usable energy from waste materials that is collected by our team and this includes commercial waste products.

This is a far more desirable option than sending this particular type of waste to landfill. We will take these waste products and turn them into refuse derived fuel (RDF) and biomass, helping to relieve our dependence on fossil fuels. This process is also known as waste-to-energy (WtE) and it works to turn waste materials into:

  • Electricity
  • Fuel
  • Electricity

For example, Willshee’s collects food waste and sends it to an Anaerobic Digestion Plant. This plant processes the food waste which, in turn, creates green electricity. However, the glass we collect, instead of being turned into energy, will be broken down and reused to produce new glass bottles and jars, for example. Our recycling services and committed team are so efficient that this process can be completed in as little as 30 days if you choose Willshee’s to dispose of your glass products.

Willshee’s uses commercial waste material to produce biomass

Biomass is derived from organic materials that Willshee’s have gathered from the entirety of collected commercial waste products. Biomass is primarily used for the generation of electricity. Willshee’s takes life-expired wood, including timber, and recycles it into biomass at our dedicated sawmill facility. Typically, this type of material is taken from:

  • Wooden pallets
  • Packaging waste streams
  • Construction materials

Once the wood has been separated and collected, it’s then chipped and ferrous and non-ferrous items are then removed using a magnet. This then ensures the wood chippings are uncontaminated so it can be sent to energy plants in order to generate electricity. Essentially, we’re taking sustainable materials and turning it into green renewable energy. This then means that waste material is diverted away from landfill sites, which is the aim and overall goal when it comes to zero-waste-to-landfill initiatives.

Willshee’s are able to produce refuse derived fuel (RDF) using commercial waste materials

RDF is made from either commercial or domestic waste that could be made up of either biodegradable metals and plastics. RDF is becoming increasingly popular across Europe as it’s a cost-effective, more eco-friendly way of producing electricity and hot water for use across communal heating systems that might be present within the local vicinity.

Here at Willshee’s we have a solid network of ports and facilities that allows us to effortlessly supply such materials to customers both within the UK and throughout Europe. Where this might result in some emissions being produced, it’s minimal when compared to the emissions associated with transporting reclaimed fuel.

We’re dedicated to reducing our own carbon footprint as well as that of our customers, so you can rest assured that we’ll only choose the most environmentally-friendly methods when retrieving and disposing of your waste, whether it be commercial or otherwise.
