Food Waste and Glass Recycling

Willshee’s are proud to be a Zero Waste to Landfill waste management company. This means we provide cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions for all your waste removal needs, and are always on the lookout for new ways to fulfil our customer’s zero waste to landfill ambitions.

We avoid sending waste to landfill at every possible turn. A large percentage of our customer base produce high amounts of both food and glass waste, so we created a dedicated collection service that deals with both, delivering more energy efficient waste disposal. Our new collection vehicle has been designed with two separate compartments, enabling us to collect both food and glass waste at the same time, which further reduces the amount of carbon emissions released into the atmosphere.

Food and glass waste are easily recyclable, but some businesses are still using landfill as a solution to their disposal. Willshee’s waste management services are efficient, affordable, and bespoke to your business’s needs. Call us today and let us help your business to do its bit in protecting our environment.

Food waste management

Approximately 10.2 million tonnes of post-farm food is wasted in the UK each year. Some of this wastage is unavoidable, but as much as half could have been put to use. Food waste creates a disproportionate amount of Greenhouse Gases as it degrades. At Willshee’s, we ensure that no further harm is caused by business food waste by disposing of it in an Anaerobic Digestion Plant in our local region. This turns waste food into renewable energy (biogas) and rich fertiliser, providing an effective and eco-friendly solution for your waste requirements.

Once the collected food waste is delivered to the plant, it goes through the full Anaerobic Digestion process. The food waste becomes compost and the gases emitted through this process are used to power a generator. The electricity created by this generator is provided, as green energy, to the national grid, further reducing our customers’ environmental impact.

Glass recycling

Glass is 100% recyclable as it doesn’t degrade through the recycling process, so it can be recycled an infinite number of times without any loss of quality or purity. It therefore makes sense that all glass should be recycled. However, over 200,000 tonnes of glass from bars, pubs, and restaurants is still being sent to landfill.

The mixed glass we collect is stored at our Burton-on-Trent depot until we reach 26 tonnes. We then deliver it to our local glass recycling facility, where the waste glass is cleaned and sorted by colour before being melted and moulded into new products. Recycled glass can be made into new usable products in as little as 30 days.

Businesses should have an effective waste management system in place to reduce their impact on the environment and make their company as efficient as possible.
